Other devices, which run constantly, will require battery changes on a weekly, even biweekly, basis.
Just consider the estimated 3 million IoT devices per average “smart city” that need batteries...
If changing the battery for each device takes around 10 minutes, this would represent a total of 500,000 hours of effort...
That’s the equivalent of over 200 person-years of work just for changing batteries in one city every single week.
So, to make the internet of things anything but a science fiction concept, batteries need to last not for days, but for years.
Energy expert Vanja Samuelsson confirms, IoT “engineers [have] to avoid power-hungry designs.”
And there’s more to this problem...
With 1 trillion estimated IoT devices consuming 1 watt, we’ll see a combined power consumption of 1 terawatt.
The total generating capacity of the U.S. is only slightly higher at 1.1 terawatts.
Semiconductor insider Jeff Lewis says that the combined IoT appetite for power “will create an aggregate power catastrophe”...
Which means that to make sense, these devices have to be designed to consume as little electricity as possible...
They have to power off completely when they’re not needed and turn back on within a tiny split second.
